Pearl Jam - Do The Evolution

"Do the Evolution" is a song by Pearl Jam, from the album Yield. Like all of Yield, "Do the Evolution" was heavily influenced by the book Ishmael by Daniel Quinn. The lyrics paint a dire and pessimistic view of humanity as a thoughtlessly selfish and violent species, so enamored of its own achievements that it is blinded to its faults. It also shows how history repeats itself. The animated music video for the song was directed by Kevin Altieri, known for his direction on Batman: The Animated Series, and Todd McFarlane, better known for his work with the popular comic book Spawn and Korn's "Freak on a Leash" video. The video was produced by Joe Pearson, the president of Epoch Ink animation, and Terry Fitzgerald at TME. It was written and developed by Joe Pearson and Kevin Altieri with input from Todd McFarlane and Eddie Vedder.

Johnny Cash - Hurt (Nine Inch Nails Cover)

"Hurt" is a song written by Trent Reznor, first released on Nine Inch Nails' 1994 album The Downward Spiral. In 2002, "Hurt" was covered by Johnny Cash to critical acclaim; it was one of Cash's final hit releases before his death. Its accompanying video, featuring images from Cash's life and directed by Mark Romanek, was named the best video of the year by the Grammy Awards and Country Music Awards.

Johnny Cash's cover of "Hurt" was released on his 2002 album, American IV: The Man Comes Around. Rick Rubin, producer of Cash's American series and a friend of Reznor, suggested the song to Cash. The line "crown of shit" was changed to "crown of thorns", not only removing profanity from the lyrics, but also more directly referencing Christ. The cover was released on a single with the B-side "Personal Jesus", a cover of the Depeche Mode single.

Reznor said that when Rubin first asked if Cash could cover his song, he was "flattered" but worried that "the idea sounded a bit gimmicky." He became a fan of Cash's version, however, once he saw the music video.

“ I pop the video in, and wow… Tears welling, silence, goose-bumps… Wow. I felt like I just lost my girlfriend, because that song isn't mine anymore… It really made me think about how powerful music is as a medium and art form. I wrote some words and music in my bedroom as a way of staying sane, about a bleak and desperate place I was in, totally isolated and alone. Somehow that winds up reinterpreted by a music legend from a radically different era/genre and still retains sincerity and meaning — different, but every bit as pure.”

The cover was given the Country Music Award for "Single of the Year" in 2003. It ranked as CMT's top video for 2003, #1 on CMT's 100 Greatest Country Music Videos the following year, and #1 on the Top 40 Most Memorable Music Videos on MuchMoreMusic's Listed in October 2007. As of July 2008, the single occupies the number one spot on Rate Your Music's Top Singles of the 2000s.[2]. The song is also Cash's sole chart entry on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart, where it hit #33 in 2003 [3]. The music video won the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Short Form Music Video. The house where Cash's music video for "Hurt" was shot, which was Cash's home for nearly 30 years, was destroyed in a fire on April 10, 2007.

The song remains popular today with more than 3,000 recorded cover versions, the first hitting the United Kingdom top 10 three months after the release of Help!. Broadcast Music Incorporated (BMI) asserts that it was performed over seven million times in the 20th century alone. The song was not released as a single in the UK at the time of the US release, and thus never gained number 1 single status in that country. However, "Yesterday" was voted the best song of the 20th century in a 1999 BBC Radio 2 poll of music experts and listeners. "Yesterday" takes the form of a melancholic acoustic ballad about a break-up. It was first released in January 1967 on their self-titled debut album. "Last Kiss" is a song that was written by Wayne Cochran in 1962 and originally performed by Wayne Cochran & the C.C. Riders, although their version of the song had little success. Cochran based the song on an accident he had witnessed in which three teenage couples were killed when their car struck a flatbed logging truck. The song was then covered in 1999 by Pearl Jam, becoming the band's biggest hit to date. The idea to cover the song came about after lead singer Eddie Vedder found an old record of the song at an antiques store in Seattle. He convinced the rest of the band to try out the song and it was performed throughout their 1998 tour. The band eventually recorded the song at a soundcheck and released it as a 1998 Fan Club Christmas single.

In the following year the cover began being played by radio stations and was ultimately put into heavy rotation across the country. By popular demand the cover was released to the general public as a single, with all of the proceeds going to the aid of refugees of the Kosovo War. The cover was also featured on the compilation No Boundaries: A Benefit for the Kosovar Refugees.

The single's famous video was directed by Jamie Thraves, who was hand-picked by the band after they saw several of his experimental short films. It was filmed near Liverpool Street Station in London, and intersperses footage of Radiohead playing the song inside an apartment with scenes of a middle-aged man who kneels down and lies on the street. Concerned citizens start to gather, thinking that something must be wrong with the man, and the band are shown looking out the window at the events below. A heated (subtitled) conversation between the man and the crowd develops, as the people start demanding what the man is doing and why he is lying there. In subtitles, the man finally gives in and says, "Yes I'll tell you, I'll tell you why I'm lying here... but God forgive me... and God help us all... because you don't know what you ask of me." The camera zooms in on his mouth as the man finally gives the answer, but the subtitles have suddenly stopped, so the reason is not revealed to the viewer. As the camera zooms back out, it shows the pavement covered with the crowd of people, all lying down just like the man.

Radiohead members have yet to reveal what specific words the man was intended to have said, if any, and Jamie Thraves, the producer has said "to tell you would deaden the impact, and would probably make you want to lie down in the road too"."

The Roots, also known as The Legendary Roots Crew, The Fifth Dynasty, The Square Roots and The Foundation, are an influential, Grammy winning Philadelphia-based hip hop group, famed for a heavily jazzy sound and live instrumentation. Inspired by the "hip-hop band" concept pioneered by Stetsasonic, the Roots themselves have garnered critical acclaim and influenced later hip-hop and R&B acts.

The video was release for the single "What They Do" in 1996. The group was poking fun at the music video that were being made in the mid-90's, but instead they pretty much summed up what would become of most future rap videos.

The Wu-Tang Clan is an American rap supergroup from New York City. Of the nine members, six artists are from Staten Island, while the rest are from Brooklyn.

The group started with just three members, RZA, GZA and Ol' Dirty Bastard, known as All In Together Now. The group then added six members and was composed of nine MCs until the death of Ol' Dirty Bastard in 2004. In 1993 the group released its debut album Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers). Since then, all nine members have released solo albums, and the group has spawned many affiliate artists. This was leader RZA's plan from the beginning: to become an empire in the rap industry by saturation of affiliated artists.

Though their style has evolved considerably over the years, the group is fundamentally known for The RZA's pioneering, gritty sample-based production and unique emceeing distinguished by heavy use of local slang and Five Percenter terminology, themes of inner-city life, and references to Hong Kong action cinema and Samurai films. Wu-Tang can be taken as a backronym for Witty Unpredictable Talent And Natural Game.

To Celebrate St. Pattys Day I was thinking that I would show my favourite skit of John Belushi's career on SNL. Here is a transcript from his "Luck of The Irish". (NBC cuts down on the internet from showing SNL skits online... I would love to show a quality video but this is all I got for today and I will erase by tomorrow. If you are one of the lucky people who catches this today then enjoy).

Jane Curtin: And now we come to St Patrick's Day and John Belushi is here to discuss the luck of the Irish.

John Belushi: Thank you, thank you very much. Well, it's come that time again, St. Patrick's Day has come and gone and well, the sons of Ireland are basking in the glow. When I think of Ireland I think a lot of colorful Irish expressions like, "Top of the morning to ya," "Kiss the barney stone," "May the road rise to meet ya," "May you be in heaven an hour before the devil knows you're dead," "I'd like to smash you in the face with my shillelagh," "Danny-boy," "Begorra," "Wail of the banshee," and "Whiskey for the leprechauns, whisky for the leprechauns."

But the expression I think most people identify with the Irish, is, of course, the luck of the Irish. The luck of the Irish. Sure. Let's say you're in a pub somewhere in Ireland, oh, anywhere in Ireland, some guy comes up to you and says, "Hey is that a bomb on you I hear ticking?" And then BAM!!! Your small intestines are on the ceiling and your brains are on your car across the street. That's the luck of the Irish for ya, who's kidding who, okay? Let's talk about the bad luck of the Irish, all right? How about this, POTATO FAMINE!! How about that? It scares them, doesn't it? Well, it should. That's why they came here in the first place. So they wouldn't have to work in the potato fields. That's why they became politicians, priests, and cops. Luck? Gimme a break.

(he gets more and more worked up as he continues)

I got a friend, his name is Dan Sullivan, he's Irish as they come. We used to drink together a lot. After two drinks, he would look like an Irish pirate. You know? You think he had luck? In one day he got his car stolen, and the stupid, he had no insurance, and no license, and he gets locked up for being drunk. And after that, he takes off for someplace like India or Nepal, or someplace like that. And his mother dies, ya know, so they wire him to tell him to come to the funeral. It's his mother's funeral, that's all. And he's in India or Nepal, sitting squat-legged listening to some sacred cow. So he comes back and he gets stopped at U.S. Customs for trafficking illegal drugs, not holding, he's trafficking. I mean, here's this guy Sullivan, his old lady kicks off, he gets popped at the border and he's sitting on fifty pounds of black Tibetan finger hash and two keys of slam. Now that's not bad luck, that's DUMB luck. I don't think luck has anything to do with it, I don't think he has any brains at all. First of all, he's drunk, then he's a junkie. I don't know what's worse! Don't ask me, ask Sullivan! And what happens?! He calls me up and says, "Hey man, I got busted at the border. I need five grand bail." I said, I said, "Five grand man!? Hey man, I've never even seen five thousand dollars in my life, so don't ask me for it, man, why don't you ask your mother!!" (aside) Which was a dumb thing for me to say because his mother just died. (returns to his loud tirade) Right now, I got this drunken Irish junkie who wants to kill me because of what I said about his mother being in terminal dreamland! Oh pal. One thing! One thing!!! They love their mothers, boy, oh they love their mothers. It's momma this, momma that. (starts flailing his arms wildly in the way only John Belushi could) Oh my Irish mother! Ireland must be heaven, because my mother.. aauugghhh! Aaauugghhh!!! (as he flails he nearly slams his head on the desk and then falls off his chair, still screaming)

Sigur Rós - Untitled (A.K.A. Vaka)

Sigur Rós are an Icelandic post-rock band with melodic, classical and minimalist elements. The name is Icelandic for "victory rose" and is pronounced "see oor roce". The band is known for their ethereal sound and lead singer Jónsi’s falsetto. Some of the band's contemporaries include múm and Amiina; both of which hail from the same creative and vibrant Icelandic post-rock music scene.

Directed by Floria Sigismondi, the music video shows a post-apocalyptic world in which children, attending school, get ready to go outside and play in the nuclear snow. The children, after putting on many layers of clothes as well as ominous gas-masks, go outside to play. The play of the children is characterized by fun, and destruction of the old world from which they came. The final scene shows a little girl breaking her gas mask and dying in the nuclear snow, finally seeing the world for its true beauty outside of the glass confines the children have been forced to use. The video won the "Best Video" award at the 2003 MTV Europe Music Awards in Edinburgh, Scotland.

"Into the Void" is a single by Nine Inch Nails for the song of the same name released in 2000. Into the Void is from the album The Fragile.

"Into the Void" is a sister-track to "La Mer," also from The Fragile; both songs grew out of the same initial track and feature the same bass line and melody. "Into the Void" starts with a short gamelan-based intro. Lyrically, Trent laments over his failed attempts of self-preservation, as he is sucked into a void of depravity, illustrated by the chorus, "tried to save myself, but myself keeps slipping away."

A music video was made for this song. It was directed by Walter Stern and Jeff Richter and released on 14 January 2000.

The song's chorus is borrowed from the song "Loving" by Half-Pint. Half-Pint has since performed songs with the Long Beach Dub All Stars (Which includes the two surviving members of Sublime).

Cat Stevens - Wild World (1971)

"Wild World" is a song written by Cat Stevens. It first appeared in his 1970 album, Tea for the Tillerman. It was the most popular single on that album. The song is in the form of the singer's words to his departing lover. Despite having continued feelings that are "breaking [his] heart in two," he accepts her decision and wishes her well, but warns her that life without him will not be so easy. The refrain begins each time with "Oh, baby, baby, it's a wild world / It's hard to get by just upon a smile."

The song has been covered by many artists, with many of the covers becoming hits of their own. As of 2006, the most famous cover of the song is by Jimmy Cliff. Some of the subsequent covers have also been in the reggae style, indicating that they may be covers of Cliff's version, as opposed to direct covers of Cat Stevens' original arrangement.

Nine Inch Nails 2009 Summer Concert Lineup

Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails has recently released his concert lineup for this summer. Last month Reznor broke the news to his fans that this could possibly be his goodbye tour as he has been playing for over twenty years now. Fans are unsure if this will be the last concert tour for NIN or if the band will be taking a break for a couple of years. Regardless, this will be a must see concert for your summer concert lineup. Joining them on the summer tour will be the 90's grunge band Jane's Addiction along with the band Street sweeper, which is the new project featuring Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine/The Nightwatchman and Boots Riley of The Coup. There are rumors that there there might be several bands joining the lineup. Either way I will keep you posted.

Lollapalooza 2008 - Part 2

This was the final day of Lollapalooza and I tried to get as much video footage as possible. There is only a speech from Saul Williams at the beginning of the video, who last year let Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails mix his record entitled The Rise And Fall of Niggy Tardust. The remainder of the video is of Nine Nails Lights in the Sky tour who closed Lolla on the final night of the three day fest. There was probably about one hundred thousand people in the park during this video. At the end there is a clip from when he say Hurt and dedicated to Johnny Cash for making the song more famous then he original did. It was a very moving moment as he said when he first started out as a new band his first headliner was at Lollapalooza 20 odd years ago. It must have been an amazing feeling for him.

This is a video I put together after I traveled to Chicago last year to go to the three day music festival called Lollapalooza. Featured in this video is The Management(MGMT), Lupe Fiasco, Gnarles Barkley and Rage Against the Machine. I was in the mosh pit for Rage so the video was pretty shaky but by far the best concert I have ever been to. Sadly I didn't know that I could bring my camera to the event the first day. I missed taping Radiohead's amazing show of their In Rainbows tour.
